Summary

Finish: This guitar appears to be a Gibson Factory refin. The finish is consistent under blacklight when compared side by side with other guitars of the period. There is evidence of a possible headstock crack repair inside the truss rod access cavity, however this is inconclusive. There appears to be neck heel repair under the finish on the back of the body/neck joint. The neck pickup cavity has been enlarged somewhat, but the white finish is covering this enlargement. The ground wire under the tailpiece is also partially covered by white finish. There are several spots around the inside of the control cavity where the white finish appears to have been chipped and finished over. In addition, the guitar appears to have originally had a side pull vibrato. For all these reasons we believe this to be a Gibson factory refinish. We think this was a 1961 guitar that was sent back to Gibson for warranty repairs in the early 60s and it was repaired, refinished and possibly re-serialized with 1963 SG Custom specs.

Body Material: Mahogany

Hardware: Original Grover patent pending stamped tuners, nut, bridge, pickguard, knobs, and tremolo.

Weight: 8 lbs 1 oz

Cosmetic Condition: This vintage LP/SG is in good cosmetic condition with moderate wear for it's age. The is minor checking around the nut. The finish shows minor dings, dents, and scratches throughout. Under the tremolo, there are three extra holes from an apparent tremolo swap. This has since been returned to the factory original tremolo.

Modifications/Repairs: -Evidence suggests early 60s Gibson warranty repairs and refinish. -Neck pickup route has been enlarged. -Possible headstock repair. -Neck heel repair. -Solder joint touch ups. -Three unplugged screw holes under the tremolo suggesting there was a side pull vibrato originally.

Serial Number: 117245

Tech Notes: This LP/SG Custom plays well with medium action. The truss rod has limited adjustability. The original frets are thin and show heavy wear. The guitar is being dated to 1963 based on the serial number.
